History of Newark GC

Tom Williamson, the long-serving professional at Notts Golf Club, played a pivotal role in Newark Golf Club’s early development. His vision helped shape the course through key enhancements, including the construction of new greens and bunkers that elevated both layout and playability.

In 1934, the club moved to its current site at Kelwick, once again guided by Williamson, who assessed and endorsed the land’s suitability. His design ensured a layout that was both challenging and enjoyable — all for the modest fee of £45.

In the decades that followed, the course continued to evolve. The renowned architect Donald Steel reworked six greens and seven tees in the 1970s, followed by further green improvements and pond enhancements in the 1980s. By the 1990s, a major landscaping effort saw dozens of mature trees planted to enrich both the visual appeal and the strategic depth of the course.

Now approaching its 125th anniversary in 2026, Newark Golf Club is in the midst of an exciting new era of investment. The clubhouse has undergone a major refurbishment, including a reconfigured layout, upgraded bar and restaurant, and flexible event spaces available for hire. On the course, robotic mowers, improved greens, and redefined bunkering continue to raise the standard of play. If you haven’t visited in a while — now is the perfect time to return.
